I am neither brown, black, or tan but I love Crocket because she is so much more intelligent than anyone I have seen in Congress! She always has her ducks in a row!

Thank you for this article. Ms. Crocket is my elected official. I like her. She’s bold, she’s ballsy and she speaks the truth. I also like Mr. Talarico. I think he will also do a fine job for Texas. Two different personalities, two people who can get things done for our state. If anyone is going to do an opinion piece, they’d better darn sure know what they are talking about before offering their “opinion”. You, Mr.Allred, at one point were my elected official as well. Male, female, white, brown or black makes no difference if you are worthy of the job. These arm chair quarterbacks need to stay in their own lane. Thank you for calling them out.

Colin- thank you for writing this thoughtful piece. I grew up in Texas and am appalled at the degradation of governance in the state. I haven’t lived in Texas for many years, yet I still love the state and want to see the political winds finally blow republicans out of office and bring fresh thinking and sanity to state and federal government. The New York Times is just another corporate mouthpiece and read with appropriate skepticism. Jasmine Crockett is a genuine hero for standing up and I hope she gets a chance to run

Amen, Colin! Though, like Mary, I am not a person of color, I AM a multi-generational Texan, born & bred, a descendant of Jane Long, “The Mother of Texas.” Like you, Colin, I was raised by a single mom, in close partnership with my maternal grandparents, who taught my sister & me true “color blindness,” with love & respect for ALL, regardless of skin color, family of origin, religion, or sexual identity. We always had a diverse group who put their feet under my grandmother’s table. I thank God everyday that I was raised by them and not my Trumpian, narcissistic, racist father.

That said, I love Jasmine and have followed her since she first made her mark on the Hill. Though she’s not my rep, down here in Houston in Wesley Hunt’s district (ugh), she represents TEXAS, not just her district. She says the quiet & most important part out loud. And she represents Texas Women. Like I say often, “you can take the girl outta Texas, but ya can’t ever take Texas outta the girl!”

Keep going Jasmine! And come back to see us in Houston!

I am a Texan only since 1988! But I love Texas and the variety of cultures! I don't care for critical " arm chair quarterbacks " and have been told since 2nd grade, that I'm too bossy...... I'm a white chick with curly hair! You're right! I think women in particular are too often dismissed for nonsense reasons! I have not really followed either candidate, but i will now look into both Crocket and Talarico, and do my best to critically consider who would be the better candidate! Thanks for bringing up this topic!

I guess I'm one of those "coastal elites" but I don't feel very elite these days. Never did, in fact, so I don't like being lumped in with "coastal elites" and I've never tried to figure out Texas. Worked civil service with kids my whole life and come from the class that works full time to put food on the table. I like to hear a politician talk about the needs of the working people in SPECIFIC TERMS and not pie in the sky. But we the people also have to be willing to make hard choices in favor of what benefits the WE instead of solely the ME. We're in this together. Thank You, Mr. Allred, for your words. SBS

Colin: thank you for this post. I was having dinner with a 22 year old woman who will be pet-sitting for me for a few weeks and we had this very conversation! I am so excited by both these candidates for the Senate. I want them both to represent me and the rest of the citizens of Texas. Just tonight I questioned the electability of Jasmine Crockett, forgetting that there is a huge group of potential voters she could attract back to the ballot box. Your article was a swift kick in the pants. Thank you for that. I’ve been donating to both campaigns and wringing my hands over having to choose between the candidates. Can’t we impeach (recall?) Ted Cruz and get Jasmine AND James? What a team that would be! Should be an interesting couple of months!

I am a dyed in the wool, educated, forever blue, coastal person—yet I love Ms. Crockett’s truth telling sass and class, and have been thoroughly impressed by her knowledge, her fearlessness and her ferocity in calling out the BS of so many on the political scene today. I hope she continues to be able to use that voice in the service of her constituents and of those of us from afar who cheer her on. Mr. Telarico is also an excellent candidate. I am hoping that neither of them have to give up their current positions in order to campaign as both of their strong voices are needed in the governing halls of power.

Thank you for your comments, Rep. Allred. You were my first pick for the senate office but I support your decision to work from within the House. It just means I can’t vote for you—- yet!

People outside Texas tend to make light of us, berate our accemts, belittle our ways. Bless their hearts, they have that right, but it would benefit them to understand they are wrong. Texans, and especially Texas women, are a force.

Tell it like it is. Jasmine does. I suspect that’s why she is drawing such ire. No lies, no party lines, just the facts. I may not always agree, but I respect her more than the imbeciles trying to convince me they know best. I taught 40 years, I know a lie when I hear it.

So I hope and pray you will continue doing good work for the people

Of Texas and I will continue to support you as I can and wait for the race when your name is on my ballot. Have you thought about the gubernatorial seat? I hope so! We need people like you working for us.

God Bless you and God bless Texas.

Excellent analysis! Colin Allred can always be counted on to speak the truth and explain the complexities of Texas politics. I'm grateful he is running, and I hope he will be elected. He's the best!
